this morning, parents and teachers all over the country including here in the bay area have a difficult dilemma, how should they talk to their children about the connecticut school massacre? and cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco where the district is providing school counselors for kids there today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. obviously this is a difficult time for everyone not just there on the east coast but here in the bay area, as well. parents and teachers are reaching out for what to say to their students and to their children. san francisco's unified school district posted this message on its website. district leaders offered their thoughts and sympathies and said we are all grieving today. the district says grief counselors will be available for students and educators to help them cope with last friday's shooting. the horrifying images and senseless violence from the newtown shootingville packed everyone across the country. district leaders say they want to be cognizant of the emotional needs of students but they also want students to know they are safe.

>> this is a random -- an isolated event and it's -- it could happen to anyone anywhere, though it most likely will not. >> reporter: dr. berry says younger children will have a harder time understanding and it's best to limit their exposure to these events. san francisco is not the only school district offering counselors today. we know that there will be other districts across the bay area doing the same thing, as well. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. president obama told mourners that parents, educators, law enforcement and mental health experts all need to join forces to prevent such tragedies in the future. gun control was a big issue in the early 1990s when congress enacted a 10-year ban on assault weapons. that ban expired in 2004. some capitol hill democrats are you will can for new gun control legislation and -- are calling for new gun control legislation and california senator dianne feinstein has a bill in the works. >> it will ban the sale, the

transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively but prospectively and it will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> senator joe manchin of west virginia a member of the national rifle association says it is time to discuss gun policy and move toward action on gun regulation. later this morning, new york mayor michael bloomberg will make a gun violence announcement. of course people attending religious service have been trying to make sense of the events in connecticut even as they pray for the victims. parishioners gathered at st. mary's cathedral yesterday in san francisco. some people are feeling anger and other emotions that lead them to question their faith. >> our faith is shaken occasionally but that's why it's so important to have a strong faith and to remain consistent in our faith in good times so that when difficult times such as these come about, we can fall back and rely on that faith. >> and church leaders at st.

showers making its way through on our high-def doppler radar. a stronger line toward the north bay and american canyon. vallejo you can see a good line defined here that's pushing through. vallejo will get hit by that in the next five minutes. so we have scattered showers this morning. i think by the afternoon, things begin to taper off but a lot of cold air on the back side of the cold front. that's going to be pushing over the bay area later on today and tonight making for a frosty night tonight and in toward tomorrow morning. outside over the bay bridge we are look okay. we have light showers showing up outside now. the temperatures fairly mild not too bad. 53 degrees in livermore, 56 in san francisco. we have our reporter elissa harrington at the bay bridge enjoying the weather. >> that's right. right now, it is drizzling. there is a little bit of wind at the bay bridge. the metering lights are on. slowing down a bit. people in the carpool lane are moving swiftly so even though it's wet, doesn't seem to be affecting traffic for the most

part. now, for people just weaking up though, don't forget your jacket or umbrella. the rain is back and showers will continue throughout the morning. temperatures out here are in the 50s with winds up to 20 miles an hour. other areas low 40s. wind gust speeds could affect waves and cause hazardous conditions for boaters so there is a small craft advisory in effect. there's also a chance of more rain tomorrow and even more or thursday. so play it safe on the roads this morning as the rain will be on and off throughout the morning commute. live at the bay bridge, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> the recipe for accidents, just add water. apparently we have problems out there. gianna? >> exactly. yeah. we are getting word from chp of this accident in sunnyvale. they have been working on it for 20 minutes. northbound 101 at mathilda blocking two right lanes. it's a serious accident. in fact, they had another one reported there in the backup so as you can see on our sensors, we have a backup there as you

work your way in and around that area. so 280 to 85, that's how you get around that mess. 237 itself you could use that as well westbound connecting over towards 101 but you might see some brake lights once you get to the 101 connector through there. elsewhere, look at this our travel times north 101 from 280, 680 interchange to highway 237, that's a 22-minute right now showing red so big delays there. again 280 a good choice. guadalupe parkway not showing any delays right now. now, marin county southbound 101 just before the golden gate bridge, we have reports of mud in the right lane. so stick to your left. not seeing any delays yet. we are about 14 minutes into san francisco. highway 121 silverado trail is closed from stonecrest to hagen. they have some downed power lines in the road. back to you. >> you can track the storm anytime with our live high-def doppler radar on our website, cbssf.com/weather. and more bay area headlines

now. the san francisco deputy accused of robbing a bank will be back in court today. police say phillip tonge robbed a bank of america in the richmond district in november. according to officers, tonge handed the teller a note saying he was armed. investigators used video to identify tonge along with the fingerprints on the note. tomorrow the santa clara county board of supervisors will consider tougher penalties for misusing taxpayer dollars. this comes after a four-year investigation of improper spending by one of the supervisors. an internal audit found shirakawa had been billing taxpayers for things like golf fees and rental car upgrades. all right. 6:10. there's disturbing details about another elementary school threat. >> the stockpile of weapons uncovered in an indiana man's home and how police prevented another disaster. >> and questions about the safety repairs being made at

the chevron refinery, what the company is doing to ease fears of another fire.

this is what our storm look like when it was up in washington. it was a powerful storm that caught some unprepared drivers off guard up at washington state. the driver lost control on i- 90. he was helped by a tow truck when a second vehicle lost control and struck the tow truck driver. the man was killed instantly. falling snow caused dozens of spinouts up there. the interstate had to be shut down. and that's what it look like in washington. we got snow in our own mountains well east of the bay area. i don't know. is mount hamilton lick maybe a dusting? maybe not? maybe by wednesday? >> not quite yet. we don't have the cold sector

moving over the bay area just yet but that will change as we'll see a lot of cold air sweeping in, in the next couple of days. outside our high-def doppler radar showing you just some light scattered showers around most of the bay area. you see a lot of that piling up in the santa cruz mountains enough to get roads slick but we have one line making its way toward vallejo, you can see the cell sliding in this direction across the 80. so toward cordelia and vallejo, stronger storms moving in your direction right now and then will pass through. we are seeing scattered showers right now. i think by the afternoon things begin to settle down somewhat, still a slight chance. and then we have some very cold nights ahead as all that air from the gulf of alaska is going to settle overhead a frosty start to the morning starting tonight into tomorrow. still, the cold front on approach a lot of the moisture ahead of it right now. behind that, you have all that cold air that's going to sweep into the bay area. computer models picking up on the scattered light showers this morning pushing on through. then toward the middle of the day, things begin to settle down. still a chance of a widely

scattered shower but less so as we head toward the afternoon, then tonight skies clear out and dry out as well allowing the temperatures to plummet tonight into tomorrow. no delays at sfo but that will likely change. temperatures there into the 50s. across the country, not too bad. 73 degrees in houston. 48 degrees and chilly in denver. 45 in chicago. mostly cloudy skies. rain possible delays in new york today. temperatures around the bay area mainly in the 50s and 60s for highs. so kind of a cool brisk breezy day outside. but temperatures really starting to drop off over the next couple of days. in fact, look at the temperatures for tuesday and wednesday. the highs maxing out only in the low to about the mid-40s. overnight lows likely to drop off into the 30s. maybe even some 20s in some of the wind sheltered valleys and then back to rain as we get into thursday, friday, and more stormy weather over the weekend. that's exciting, huh, gianna? >> that is a lot of weather movement happening and unfortunately makes for a very exciting commute. we have a lot going on, on the

roadways. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights on, traffic slow up the incline. give yourself some extra time. now we have a couple of accidents. i just got word of one from chp. i couldn't make a map for it. it just came in a couple of minutes ago. south 680 at main street overturned vehicle. they are heading out to the scene possibly blocking lanes. also blocking lanes north 101 at mathilda. couple of accidents in this area. you can see this line of red here, we have some slow and go conditions. it is block the two right lanes making it for a very busy commute so use 280 to 85 to get around. you can cut across 237 but you will see a bit of a backup connecting on 101 close to where that accident is. so drive time 25 minutes north 101, 280 to the 237. so 280 a much better choice. guadalupe parkway though not showing any delays. no brake lights out of marin county, just mud reported in the right lane southbound 101 just as you hit the golden gate bridge. also highway 121 silverado trail shut down in both

directions at least until 7:00 between stonecrest and hagen road. this is for an accident where downed power lines are in the road. starting to see a backup through the altamont pass westbound 580 slow-and-go, 32 minutes now from the altamont pass as you work your way towards 680. delays as you hit 680 as well in both directions. also, westbound highway 4 through antioch, lots of brake lights reported there. 880 not a bad ride, northbound going to see delays at the maze but so far, so good. southbound good towards hayward. about 16 minutes between 238 and the maze. of course, mass transit a good choice this morning, bart, ace, muni, caltrain and your ferries all on time. >> thank you. seems like mass transit will be your friend all week. thanks. a man in indiana is facing some pretty serious charges after he allegedly threatened to kill people at an elementary school near his home. police found 47 guns and about $100,000 worth of ammunition. inside the cedar lake home of

von meyer. he now faces charges of felony intimidation. two police officers are dead and the search for their killer is under way in topeka, kansas. the officers are responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle when they were shot yesterday outside a grocery store. investigators say they are looking for a 22-year-old man, although they have not revealed the suspect's name or a possible motive. chevron says it's installing a different kind of piping in its richmond oil refinery that should prevent fires like the one back in august. according to the "san francisco chronicle," the piping is made to resist the type of corrosion that's believed to have caused the recent fire. official tests to determine the cause of the fire are not complete. and thursday state regulators are expected to approve a plan that pg&e says will improve its pipeline safety. that plan comes two years after this, the pg&e pipeline that exploded killing 8 people in san bruno. the "san francisco examiner"

says the plan includes replacement of 185 miles of pipeline and automating 200 valves. gas prices are continuing to fall. aaa says the statewide average price for a gallon of regular is $3.57. that is down 24 cents from mid- november. the highest average price in the bay area is, no surprise, san francisco. 3.62. but that's down 30 cents from just a month ago. oakland checking in at 3.51. and the average in san jose also 3.51. 20 minutes after 6:00 on this monday morning and thanks, by the way, for coming by cbs 5. we do appreciate it. now, to catch up on sports, whose defense played better on sunday, the raiders or the 49ers? >> plus, it was quite the catch. our play of the day is next. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

when he killed himself as police approached. the school district is make plans to send surviving students to a former school building in a neighboring town. and we are going to get an update from newtown but first we go live to connecticut for the latest in a press conference that police, law enforcement, are holding now. let's listen. >> message from the superintendent of schools relative to educational process here in town. >> good morning. the healing is still going on. schools are work very closely with all the faculty, students and parents to try to be respectful, to try to resume what normalcy we can after a tragedy such as this. all the faculties meeting today at the newtown high school to plan further on how to handle -- address the needs of the student and faculty involved in

many bay area schools where counselors will be on hand today. tell us about it, cate. >> reporter: good morning, brian. yes, the effects of last friday's shooting has affected us all across the country and as many teachers and students go back to classes today in the bay area, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. now, san francisco's unified school district is one of the many across the bay acknowledging how hard this will be for educators and students. mayor lee and the superintendent released a statement letting our schools know there will be counselors available to help anybody deal with trauma and stress. the images of last friday's newtown school shooting across the country have hit us here home. psychologists say younger children will have the hardest time understanding it all. >> so for those children, it's really important to try and limit their exposure to these events, all the news coverage, and to more importantly reassure to them the safety of their environment. >> reporter: older children will have a better

about. and brian, right? >> a bad hair day. >> he has big sexy hairspray today. >> i understand that. around the bay area, we have scattered light showers this morning kind of nuisance rainfall. if you are headed up the road, they are slick so be careful. we are seeing a cell moving in now a band of moisture sliding through bringing heavier rainfall in toward hercules right now. also that scattered shower and line continuing this may be the cold front right in through san francisco. now there's not much energy with in system as it slides through. once we get past the cold front i think it turns more towards showery weather. so as we look toward the afternoon, things begin to dry out but that cold air will move in from the gulf of alaska so this is going to push in across the bay area later on tonight and into tomorrow morning. that means some very cold temperatures, some frosty days ahead. and then we have more storms lining up on the horizon. right now showers in the bay area right now and temperatures mainly in the 50s. to get a better look at the storm and what it looks like outside, cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in the middle of it. >> reporter: good morning.

well, it is chilly and windy out here and the roads are slick as drives head on the bay bridge. behind me you can see the metering lights are on so it's slowed down a bit but everyone else is moving smoothly. drivers are splashing around in the puddles past the toll plaza on a soggy commute. the rain has been on and off all morning and should taper off by the afternoon. temperatures here in the 50s in some other places have dipped into the 40s. there's also a small craft advisory in effect because of some strong wind speeds that could cause hazardous wave conditions for boaters. that's in effect until 9 a.m. chance of showers tuesday and thursday. so have your rain jackets and umbrellas on hand. back here on the bay bridge the rain has caused some pooling. there are some large puddles past the toll plaza. so watch out for those. they have put up signs warming people about flooding. i checked on delays at the airport at sfo. there are some delays running about 45 minutes. reporting live at the bay

bridge, elissa harrington, cbs 5. we got the bay bridge from all angles covered today. we go over to gianna franco with the latest on the morning commute at the toll plaza. >> that's right. let's get another perspective here and as elissa harrington said, some lanes are very slow but some of those fastrak lanes are okay. metering lights are on backed up to 880 at this point. a little sluggish up the incline. on the san mateo bridge, live look at conditions there. you can see on the westbound side as you head out of hayward toward foster city, we are seeing a few more cars, looks like though about a 17-minute ride to go between 880 and 101. eastbound not showing any delays towards hayward. south 680 at north main street overturned vehicle reported possibly blocking lanes. chp is on scene and we see a line of yellow so that means speeds around 25 to 40 miles an hour. south bay now, we are dealing with slow-and-go conditions north 101, 280 to 237. we have this accident at mathilda. it's out of lanes but the damage is done. back to you. 41 minutes after 6:00, that

igniting the debate. welcome back. well, gun control has been a hot topic recently in california. and, of course, the shooting in connecticut is reigniting debate. >> and "san francisco examiner" columnist melissa griffin joins us. one legislator is vowing to ban semi-automatic weapons.

>> reporter: one would think that semi-automatic weapons are already banned in the state of california but there is this enormous loophole that gun owners and gun sellers have been using. basically in california, what the law focuses on is the quickness with which a person can change ammunition in a gun. so our laws say that if you can depress with your finger a button and change out a magazine of ammunition, very quickly, then that is a semi- automatic weapon and you cannot have that in the state of california. however, people have been getting around this by using what's called a bullet button. and as you can see, there is a small depression that people use a bullet actually or some other implement to press the button to change the ammo. this is just as quick basically as a semi-automatic where you can use your finger. so the change actually gets around the intent of the law in california. you can see how quickly that can be done.

so last year state senator leland yee whose district includes san francisco introduced legislation that would get around or sort of close this loophole and expand our semi-automatic weapon ban to include guns like this. that failed in the appropriations committee. on friday, when these shootings happened, leeland lee said we'll reintroduce the legislation as soon as we reconvene in january of 2013. >> this is a lot of political talk but what are the chances that this actually passes? >> actually good. it was fleshed out very well in the last session. the democrats are vastly supermajority as we know in the assembly and in the senate. we have a governor who is very sympathetic to this. the political will is there and not only that, but i think state legislatures all over the state will be going in this direction. everyone is looking at the obama administration and dianne feinstein but the truth is right here in california, in a democratic-controlled state legislature throughout the country in colorado, illinois, connecticut, and in massachusetts, i think we'll see a lot of activity. people dusting off those laws that they have been wanting to

pass for a while but weren't sure there was a political will to do it they are going to be introducing those in the next year. >> are you in a big hurry? >> absolutely. you have to strike while the iron is hot. democrats are feeling very emboldened. >> so what is the big hurry? a week, a month? >> the legislature doesn't convene until january 7 and so if this passed in the course of the 2013 session, it would take effect in january of 2014. >> what do you think the odds? >> extremely good that this will pass. it's hard to argue against t democrats are feeling very strongly about this. you will see other legislation that addresses secondary markets like pawn shops and gun shows. those are going to be reintroduced. those are things that democrats have been trying to do for a long time and i think that they see now that this is going to be a really good way to capitalize on all of their good will they feel like they earned in the last election. >> and you can find more of -- thanks very much, by the way, for coming by in all the wind

and rain. find more on melissa's segments on cbssf.com/mornings. apple is doing brisk business in china with the new iphone and google avoids penalties in an anti-trust investigation. jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. apple has been under pressure of late. we have seen its stock drop about $200 since hitting an all- time high over $700 back in september. iphone sales have been a big worry with the new 5 out. but it looks like sales were off to a strong start in china. apple says it sold 2 million iphone 5s in the first three days of business in china. there are some expectations that the company could sell up to 50 million iphones in the current quarter. there are other concerns about the new ipad mini cannibalizing sales of its larger sibling. google is unscathed by an antitrust investigation here in the united states, according to the "wall street journal." a number of rivals say google's

search practices emphasize its own services and companies over that of competitors but the "wall street journal" says u.s. federal trade commission won't force google to sign a consent decree and google will voluntarily make changes. looks like they are facing a similar probe in europe. stock market has been focused on "fiscal cliff" talks of late. negative sentiment last week, some hope after some weekend talks. so let's see how the market is doing now. dow higher by 52 points. nasdaq is up by 14. s&p gaining 7. apple shares flat, google up 1.5% on the "wall street journal" report. back to you. >> thank you, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. well, if you can avoid the post office today, you may want to. expect long lines there. it's going to be the busiest mailing day of the year with a crush of holiday packages. there will be a 20% increase in

package deliveries compared to last year. that could help the struggling service recover from the recent billion-dollar losses. it's time now for a look at what's coming up later on "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is in newtown, connecticut. >> reporter: good morning, brian, elizabeth. it is a tough morning here in newtown with the first of the funerals beginning today. but we're also hearing some remarkable stories of bravery and heroism. ahead gayle king talks with the family of victoria soto, a first grade teacher who died while trying to shield her students. also, john miller tells us what he is learning about the investigation. and we are going to focus on preventing future tragedies from gun control to mental illness. we'll take a look at it all ahead at 7:00. thank you, norah. man, ladies and gentlemen, mr. k the what's the latest? >> this isn't a huge storm. we have some light showers showing up around the bay area but if you are headed out the door kind of a nuisance rainfall. if you are look at the roadways a little different so be careful. high-def doppler radar showing you showers moving through with a cold front sliding on by. the south bay is seeing scattered showers in toward the san jose area. that will continue on and off this morning and then begin to taper off as we head in toward the afternoon. in fact, it looks like the worst will come through this morning and that's not even that bad then clearing toward the afternoon with a slight chance of showers. but we have some much colder air coming so some very chilly nights. all that cold air really plunging from the gulf of alaska is going to move into place later on today and tonight so we have some frosty nights ahead as we look toward tonight and in toward tomorrow. all right. we have the system moving through today early on you're seeing that rainfall sliding on through. by the afternoon, some speckled clouds, a wandering shower will end and then your skies start to clear out and dry out. that means a cold night tonight

but some of the temperatures down into the 30s. numbers today in the 50s, maybe low 60s and then look at the temperatures for tuesday and wednesday. very chilly into the afternoon. and then we have a chance of more rain as we head in toward thursday and friday. let's check the roads now with gianna. >> all right, lawrence. the roads continue to be very busy this morning. on the maps, we have slow conditions south 680 at south main street. that off-ramp is blocked for an overturned vehicle slowing down the main lines of the freeway, as well. so busy as you work your way there. sluggish through the altamont pass 37 minutes. slow and go back into san jose. give yourself some extra time there. use 280 to 85 as an alternate. highway 121 closed stonecrest to hagen. power lines are in the road. grab your chance for 80, 50 and 88. there are snow chain requirements for sierra travel so just a heads up and, of course, back in the bay area, mass transit a great choice

today. use bart, ace, muni, caltrain and your ferries, everything on time. a quick live look at the bay bridge now. metering lights are on and traffic is backed up. the fastrak lanes some are moving okay. back to you >> thank you. nasa's latest moon mission is about to meet its end. twin spacecraft are poised to crash into a mountaineer the moon's north pole. that will happen at 2:28 this afternoon pacific time. that's after a year in orbit. nasa planned the crash to void striking the apollo landing sites or other places on the moon with special importance. the spacecraft are nobody as ebb and flow. they have been measuring the moon's gravity. they are going to crash them now that the mission has ended. you wouldn't be able to see it because they are doing it out of the line of side. besides, at this distance it's going to be a tiny crash. it will come to a fiery end in a few hours. time now 6:54. coming up, we feel get a final check of your top stories. ,,,,,, [ laughter ]

to be laid to rest. now 3 minutes before 7:00 on monday morning. funerals will be held today for two children the first victims of the connecticut school shooting to be laid to rest. investigators are still trying to figure out why adam lanza killed his mother in newtown friday and then opened fire at sandy hook elementary school in all killing 20 children and several adults. a state police spokesman just confirmed that two injured adults survived and they are currently hospitalized. meanwhile, school officials are working on details to resume classes for sandy hook students. they are not sure about what they are going to do yet. they are expected to be held at a former building in a nearby town. but they don't know for sure. schools across much of the bay area will be have grief counselors available today following shootings in connecticut. one is lakeshore elementary

school in san francisco. the city's school district has posted a statement from the superintendent and mayor ed lee. it starts by saying we are all grieving and adds that counselors will be on hand for educators as well as students today. we are going to get a final check of traffic and weather. the big news, weather wise grab an umbrella. >> and a jacket. it's going to be cool out there today. we have some scattered light showers showing up on our high- def doppler radar. not a whole lot of rainfall out of this system, although enough to get the ground wet. temperatures by the afternoon will be drying things out. 50s and low 60s. then that cold air moves in a very chilly night tonight, chilly tomorrow and also on wednesday. more rain is expected by thursday. gianna. >> that rain means troubles on the roads. here's a live look on conditions at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights rob. you're backed up through there so yeah, grab that jacket and get going just real inning quick accidents 680 south main street northbound guadalupe parkway at curtner and northbound 101 at mathilda clearing. but very slow throughout the south bay. >> i was doing weather over the
